Itinerary - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Day 1

Arriving at the Kona Airport. Please be sure your flight arrives by 3:00PM. Transfer to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Along the way will stop to explore some black sand beaches and look for sea turtles relaxing on the shore. After settling in to the Country Goose B&B, we will have a festive dinner and then gather for an overview of our upcoming excursion through Hawaii. Afterwards, we will gather at a vista point with an incredible view of the Volcanoe to participate in the “Friendship Circle”, an interactive game designed to help everyone get acquainted.

Day 2

Welcome and Introductions from the National Park Service. Review safety precautions and begin working to restore the delicate ecosystems of the Soapberry Canopy Rainforest . In the late afternoon we will visit a fascinating volcanological museum, the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum and Observatory and then hike through rainforests filled with giant tree ferns, underground lava tubes and down into the mouth of a volcano to view sulfur banks and steam vents. From there we will visit the charming small Hawaiian town of Pahalo to dine and explore its ethnic shops and sights.

Day 3

Continuing working in the rainforest. After work we will explore the dramatic 11-mile Crater RimDrive to explore volcanoes and dramatic lava formations. At the end of the drive we will view the sunset over black sand beaches and watch a spectacular display of glowing molten lava pour into the moonlit ocean.

Day 4

Complete our project with the park service by noon. Depart for Hilo. On the way we will visit a Macadamia Nut Factory and an orchid nursery. Once we arrive in Hilo, we will enjoy a VIP Tour through the fascinating Lyman Museum. From there we will go to Akaka Falls, a breathtaking waterfall that drops hundreds of feet into the heart of a flower-strewn rainforest. On the way back to the cabins will stop to enjoy a picnic dinner at a beautiful black sand beach and take in some snorkeling until sunset.

Day 5

After breakfast we will load up the vans and relocate to our condos at the Kanaloa at Kona. On the way will stop at the City of Refuge to learn of Hawaii’s cultural history and enjoy some spectacular snorkeling. Once we have checked into our condos there will be free time to relax at the pool, the nearby beach where sea turtles abound, shop or take a nap on the lanai.

Day 6

Tour the Kona side of the island and hike along the remote Pololu Coast , take in extraordinary vistas, body surf, and hang out on the world’s most beautiful beaches. On the way back we will stopto relax and snorkel at Hapuna Beach, ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Day 7

Kayak and snorkel at Captain Cook Bay , a marine sanctuary where dolphins frolic and play. We will also take in several cultural sites including the fascinating Painted Church and other points of interest. To cap off the day there will also be an optional Luau for those wishing to attend.

Depart from Kona International Airport
