The Nature Corps has made significant contributions to the preservation of Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. The Corps's volunteer program began in the Giant Forest in 1990. Since then The Nature Corps's volunteers have donated their labor on projects valued at nearly $750,000
The Nature Corps' largest project in Sequoia centered on the protection of the world famous General Sherman Tree -- the largest living organism on earth. Nearly one million people visit this magnificent resource annually. The high visitation was resulting in substantial impact on the immediate environs and impairing the health of the surrounding grove of ancient sequoias. The Nature Corps undertook a massive restoration of the area, a project valued at $350,000. For its accomplishments The Nature Corps received three "Take Pride in California" Awards.
Projects on upcoming volunteer vacations include:
Rehabilitate the native ecosystem within the Giant Forest
Plant sequoia seedlings to assure a healthy population of these magnificent trees
Build new trails in the Giant Forest and along the Kings River
Restore front and back country trails
Plant a variety of pine seedlings (over 20,000 seedlings in stock)
Volunteers will devote approximately half of the volunteer vacation to working on projects similar to those listed above. After experiencing the personal rewards of contributing to the preservation of this magnificent natural treasure, we will have the opportunity to explore the world renown Giant Sequoia groves, Crystal Cave (one of the few marble caves in the Western United States) and the High Sierra where we will enjoy breathtaking views of the Great Western Divide.
Each morning we will rise to the wonderful aromas of coffee and a hearty breakfast prepared by our outdoor chef. After preparing our lunch, we'll form small travel groups to seek out and study fascinating points of interest in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Led by experienced and knowledgeable naturalists, participants will hike past alpine meadows, glacial lakes and snow-capped mountains as they explore and learn about the High Sierra. Once we return to our base camp, you will have free time to enjoy hiking, fishing, photography, reading, playing Frisbee, or taking a nap under a majestic pine.
After a full day of fun and learning, we will be lured to dinner by the wonderful aromas of meals prepared by our outdoor chef. Each evening a festive dinner will be served as we dine under the Milky Way. Then we'll gather around the campfire for dessert and enjoy laughter-filled activities and games as we reflect on this memorable volunteer vacation.
