Your excursion begins at our secluded base camp in the heart of Sequoia National Park. After settling in, we will enjoy a festive dinner and meet with park staff for an overview of our upcoming adventure in Sequoia. Afterwards, we will hike into the world-renowned Giant Forest to get an incredible view of the General Sherman sequoia, the largest living tree on earth. This great tree is now estimated to be around 2300 years old and still “growing like a teenager”. It is 275 feet tall and is 36 feet in diameter at the base. After our hike, we’ll gather around the evening campfire to savor one of our chef’s delectable desserts.
After waking up to the savory aromas of a hearty breakfast, we will prepare for our day in the field. Once we arrive at the project site, park biologists will provide further information and direct us on this important conservation effort to restore Sequoia’s rare and unique ecosystems. The project will wrap up by mid-afternoon at which time we will head back to camp. A hearty BBQ dinner will be awaiting us as we dine surrounded by Sequoia’s magnificent wilderness. After dinner we’ll ascend Moro Rock to view a spectacular sunset as the flash of alpine glow brings the Great Western Divide into contrast with Sequoia’s expansive star-studded sky.
Today we will continue working on our project until noon. After work we will enjoy an easy 1.5 mile hike to beautiful Tokopah Falls. Tokopah Falls is one of the highlights to see in Sequoia National Park, a beautiful 1200 ft. high cascade along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. After dinner we will explore Round Meadow, where bears, deer, and other wildlife can often be sighted.
This morning we will ascend Little Baldy. It is an easy trek to the summit of an enormous granite dome that provides sweeping 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. From there we will continue north to Redwood Canyon, where one of the park’s largest sequoia groves is secluded in this remote canyon. As lunch approaches we head to picturesque Hume Lake where we will enjoy a picnic by the lake. The lake provides opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing or relaxing with a good book on the beach at Sandy Cove. The rest of the afternoon you are free to visit park museums, shop or head back to camp for a nice afternoon nap. That evening we’ll enjoy a celebratory banquet as part of our Farewell Ceremony.
After breakfast we will break camp and head out to photograph spectacular Crescent Meadow. John Muir referred to Crescent Meadow as “the most beautiful meadow in the Sierra Nevada” — and he is right! This stunning meadow is one of the few places on earth where giant sequoias surround this biologically rich habitat. From there the group will venture down the road to Crystal Cave, one of the few marble caves in the western United States. It is spectacularly lit up inside and the underground creeks and limestone formations are remarkable. It is hard to believe that something that beautiful is 200 feet below the surface of the earth! The program concludes after the cave tour.
Exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Sierra Nevada while creating cherished memories that will never be forgotten.
Families are invited to go behind the scenes with the National Park Service to preserve Sequoia’s world-renowned resources…and create a family legacy that will span many generations.
During the day families will volunteer on rewarding conservation projects, while in the evenings enjoy laughter-filled presentations around the campfire that will help you enrich your family’s vacation.
This memorable retreat will take place in the magnificent setting of Sequoia NP where you’ll come together to meet other families and youth, enjoy exquisite meals, and camp under the stars..
